Dr. J.B. Danquah’s lively intelligence and his unending commitment to the course of liberal democracy led to him being described as “the man at the back of nearly all political movements.” Joseph B. Danquah was a Ghanaian political leader who played a pivotal role throughout Ghana’s pursuit of independence and during the country’s early years up until his death. He founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the elite party from which all successive independence movements sprang. The UGCC included the likes of Nkrumah. Danquah also founded the West Africa Times, which advocated fundamental human rights and denounced foreign domination. Danquah actively sought increased measures of self-government for the Gold Coast.
